Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac has delivered a detailed squad update as the club prepares for its upcoming Bundesliga encounter with Werder Bremen.
The international break has created several uncertainties for the Black and Yellows, leaving the coaching staff assessing multiple players’ fitness ahead of Friday’s fixture.
Nico Schlotterbeck was forced to depart the Germany national team camp after sustaining an injury during training.
The defender’s availability remains unclear, prompting careful monitoring at the club. Wing-backs Julian Ryerson and Daniel Svensson, along with young attacking talent Konstantinos Karetsas, have also returned from international duty carrying doubts over their readiness.
Kovac said the team currently has two players who are a little under the weather: Konstantinos Karetsas and Daniel Svensson.
He noted that Mathis Albert is scheduled to return from America the following day. The coach further explained that it is still uncertain whether Julian Ryerson will be fit in time for the weekend match.
In addition, Carney Chukwuemeka has returned with minor muscular problems that require attention.
Regarding Schlotterbeck, Kovac stated that the player has been working individually. The plan is for him to rejoin team training the next day, after which the coaching staff will evaluate whether he is ready to feature or not.
Kovac emphasized that anyone familiar with Schlotterbeck knows he always wants to play and possesses strong ambition.
The Dortmund coach also voiced criticism of the demanding schedule imposed during the international window, which required national teams to contest four matches.
He remarked that it was definitely too much for players to handle four fixtures combined with the extensive traveling involved.
These comments highlight ongoing concerns about player welfare and recovery time following congested international periods.
As Dortmund continue preparations, the medical and coaching teams will make final decisions closer to the match.
The outcome of these assessments will shape the starting lineup and depth available against Werder Bremen, as the club aims to maintain momentum in the Bundesliga.
