Dortmund to fend off suitors for star midfielder as contract extension talk begin

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha drew significant attention from top European clubs last summer, with Inter Milan, Juventus, and Manchester United all vying for his signature. 

Despite the interest, Nmecha remained at Signal Iduna Park, where his current contract runs until 2028. 

However, Dortmund’s management is eager to secure his future sooner rather than later, aiming to extend his deal and deter potential suitors ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

According to recent reports, the club has initiated only informal talks regarding Nmecha’s extension. Dortmund’s immediate priorities lie elsewhere, focusing on renewing the contracts of key players Nico Schlotterbeck and Karim Adeyemi, both set to expire in 2027. 

By addressing these first, the Black and Yellows aim to prevent entering the 2026/27 season with just a year left on those deals, which could weaken their negotiating position or invite bids from rivals.

Nmecha’s journey at Dortmund has been one of resilience and growth. Over the past eight months, the 25-year-old German international has transformed into one of the team’s standout performers. 

The start of 2025 was challenging for both player and club; under new head coach Nuri Şahin, Dortmund suffered three consecutive defeats, compounded by Nmecha’s knee injury in late January, which sidelined him temporarily.

It was the arrival of Niko Kovač, Nmecha’s former coach at Wolfsburg, that sparked a remarkable turnaround. Kovač’s familiarity with Nmecha’s playing style unlocked his potential, leading to consistent, high-level displays in the Bundesliga.

Since then, Nmecha has justified the €30 million transfer fee Dortmund paid to Wolfsburg in July 2023.

His blend of technical skill, vision, and defensive tenacity has made him indispensable in midfield, contributing to Dortmund’s improved form. 

As a versatile box-to-box player, he has not only stabilized the team’s engine room but also added creativity and goals. 

If Nmecha can maintain his fitness amid the rigors of a demanding schedule, he is undoubtedly a talent to watch in 2026.

With Dortmund pushing for domestic and European success, extending his contract could be pivotal in building a squad capable of challenging Bayern Munich and beyond. 

As the season progresses, Nmecha’s evolution underscores Dortmund’s knack for nurturing overlooked gems into elite stars.
