Argentina’s dramatic run to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked controversy after Egypt accused match officials of favouring the defending champions during their dramatic 3-2 last-16 defeat.
Egypt have formally called on FIFA to remove the officiating team from the tournament, alleging bias towards Argentina and captain Lionel Messi following a match that saw La Albiceleste recover from two goals down to progress.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan claimed his side had been “treated unfairly” and suggested there was a desire to keep the reigning world champions and Messi in the competition.
The Pharaohs pointed to several contentious refereeing decisions, including the VAR review that ruled out Mostafa Zico’s goal for a foul earlier in the build-up, as well as two penalty appeals that were waved away before Enzo Fernández scored Argentina’s stoppage-time winner.
Hassan argued that the officiating displayed double standards and denied his team a historic place in the quarter-finals.
While the decisions have generated widespread debate, there is no evidence to support claims of a conspiracy.
The disallowed Egyptian goal stemmed from a foul detected during the attacking phase of play, while the penalty appeals involving Hamdi Fathy and Mohamed Salah were deemed insufficient for VAR intervention.
Although the calls remain controversial, analysts maintain they fall within the interpretation of the Laws of the Game rather than proving deliberate favouritism toward Argentina.
Questions have also resurfaced over earlier officiating involving Messi during the tournament.
The Argentina captain escaped punishment for a challenge on Algeria’s Aissa Mandi in the group stage, an incident many compared to the VAR red card shown to United States striker Folarin Balogun in a separate match.
Critics argue Messi benefited from a more lenient interpretation, allowing him to remain available for subsequent matches in which he added five more goals to his tournament tally.
Further scrutiny has been directed at FIFA’s tournament structure and officiating appointments.
Argentina’s path to the quarter-finals has been viewed by some as comparatively favourable following adjustments to the World Cup draw that kept the top four ranked nations apart until the semi-finals.
In addition, FIFA appointed an all-Argentine on-field officiating team for France’s quarter-final against Morocco, a decision that has raised questions over perception despite confidence in the officials’ professionalism and impartiality.
