England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA following his red card in the Three Lions’ dramatic 3-2 World Cup round-of-16 victory over Mexico.
The 23-year-old was dismissed in the 54th minute after a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo was deemed serious foul play, with FIFA’s disciplinary committee imposing an additional one-match ban on top of the automatic suspension.
The decision means Quansah will miss England’s quarter-final clash against Norway and a potential semi-final should Thomas Tuchel’s side advance.
The Bayer Leverkusen defender will only be eligible to return for the World Cup final if England make it that far.
The Football Association had explored the possibility of appealing the sanction, but tournament regulations provide no avenue to challenge the disciplinary ruling.
Despite being unable to appeal the ban itself, the FA is understood to have raised concerns with FIFA over the process that led to Quansah’s dismissal.
Officials reportedly argued that the referee was initially shown a still image and slow-motion replays of the challenge before viewing the incident at full speed on the pitchside monitor, claiming the sequence may have contributed to “outcome bias” during the VAR review.
Quansah’s suspension adds to Tuchel’s growing selection problems at right-back.
The defender had stepped into the role against Mexico due to Reece James’ hamstring injury, while Djed Spence was only fit enough for a substitute appearance.
However, Tuchel has expressed optimism that James could return in time for Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway. FIFA has also confirmed that French referee Clément Turpin will officiate the match.
The punishment has also reignited debate over consistency in FIFA’s disciplinary decisions following the controversial handling of United States striker Folarin Balogun’s red card.
Balogun, who was also sent off for serious foul play, saw his suspension controversially suspended for 12 months after intervention from FIFA, allowing him to remain available for the knockout stages.
The decision attracted criticism from UEFA, Belgium, and Tuchel, while France’s subsequent attempt to overturn Michael Olise’s yellow card was rejected.
