Dallas Stadium will witness the renewal of one of European football’s fiercest rivalries in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday as France and Spain lock horns.
Les Bleus have provided outstanding performance in the tournament, winning all three group-stage matches before eliminating Sweden, Paraguay, and Morocco to reach the last four.
Spain, on the other hand, made a slow start after a goalless draw against Cabo Verde and went to the top of their group, knocking out Austria, Portugal, and Belgium.
Didier Deschamps’ men are hoping to become the second European nation to reach three consecutive FIFA World Cup finals after West Germany, after winning the 2018 edition and being runners-up in 2022.
France dominated both ends of the pitch, scoring 13 goals, conceding just two, and has yet to concede a goal in the knockout rounds.
Kylian Mbappé, France’s all-time highest goalscorer, leads the scoring chart with eight goals in the tournament, while Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola, and Désiré Doué have provided creativity and pace in the final third.
William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano have formed one of the competition’s most solid central defensive partnerships, and Spain’s creative force can unlock them, but that will be a tough task.
Although they have steadily grown into the tournament, their spirited performance against Austria, Portugal, and Belgium took them to the semi-finals.
Having built their success around midfield, Rodri, Pedri, and Dani Olmo can dictate possession, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams offer pace and unpredictability in wide areas.
They will definitely stretch France and have also impressed defensively, conceding just once in the tournament, with Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsi anchoring the defense.
Both teams are expected to have an unchanged starting line-up. Didier Deschamps is likely to stick with Adrien Rabiot and Manu Kone in midfield, while Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele, and Desire Doue will support Kylian Mbappe in attack.
Spain will have Unai Simón in goal, behind a defense featuring Porro, Cubarsi, Laporte, and Cucurella.
Rodri and Pedri are expected to form an anchor in the midfield while Dani Olmo operates behind captain Mikel Oyarzabal. Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena could be deployed on the flank.
Spain had the last laugh against them en route to Euro success, defeating France in both the UEFA EURO 2024 semi-final and the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League semi-final.
This will be a tough clash that could go down to the wire as both jostle for the ticket to the final.
