Familiar Sight for the Spurs as Tottenham Takes Down Leeds, 3-0

Tottenham finally had a performance that even Jose Mourinho would be proud of as both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min found the back of the net in Saturday afternoon’s 3-0 win vs Leeds United.

Kane, returning after the birth of his child last week, scored via penalty (29′) while Son added another goal before halftime (43′). Toby Alderweireld added the third goal of the match (50’).

Tottenham moved into the No. 3 spot in the Premier League standings with the one; Leicester City and Everton are on their heels but Tottenham have the nod heading into Saturday evening.

“The understanding [between Kane and Son] is good,” Mourinho said after the win. “Against Leeds it was important to have mobility in attack because they mark man to man and if you stay in static positions you give them an easy job. When you have mobility it is more difficult for them. That movement of Kane appearing on the right side and Sonny in a finishing position, it fit well with our game plan. They are doing special things this season.”

Son and Kane have combined to score nearly 80% of Tottenham’s goals this season. Mourinho did add that he expects winger Steven Bergwijn to potentially have an impact as 2021 matches get under way.

“We need him to score goals, we know he has the ability, if you go back one year, first match, he scored an amazing goal. We know he has the ability for that,” Mourinho said. “He’s accumulating physical problems, I don’t know if you could understand but even in the last 10 minutes he was holding his groin, adductor, he has been having problems stopping him now and again to train properly and at high-intensity, but he gives very good things for the team. I believe goals will arrive if his condition improves.”

Tottenham match up against Brentford (1/5, EFL Cup) and Marine (1/10, FA Cup) next week before their next Premier League fixture vs Aston Villa on Jan. 13.
