Fernandes breaks assist record as Carrick begins permanent United era with emphatic Brighton win

Bruno Fernandes rounded off another outstanding season by breaking the Premier League record for assists in a single campaign and scoring a goal of his own as Manchester United defeated Brighton in Michael Carrick’s first game as permanent manager.

The United captain, who has already collected both the Premier League Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards, once again proved decisive in a performance that highlighted his importance to the club’s revival this season.

Fernandes set the new assist record in the first half when his corner delivery was powerfully headed home by Patrick Dorgu. The goal moved him clear of Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne, whose shared record he had equalled against Nottingham Forest the previous week.

United looked sharp throughout and doubled their lead after an excellent move involving Amad Diallo and Mason Mount. Their quick combination opened space for Bryan Mbeumo, who calmly finished to give the visitors full control before the break.

Only three minutes into the second half, Fernandes added his own name to the scoresheet, drilling home United’s third goal to complete another influential display from the Portuguese midfielder.

The result continued the impressive run under Carrick, who has now won 12 of his 17 matches since stepping in earlier in the year. When he first took charge in January, many supporters doubted United could recover strongly enough to secure Champions League football after missing out for two seasons. However, Carrick has overseen a dramatic turnaround and guided the club back into Europe’s top competition with games to spare.

His calm approach and willingness to trust younger players have earned praise from supporters. Carrick restored Kobbie Mainoo to the starting line-up in recent weeks and has also shown confidence in academy prospects such as Shea Lacey and Tyler Fletcher.

Brighton’s evening ended with mixed emotions. Fabian Hurzeler’s side still secured qualification for next season’s Uefa Conference League after finishing eighth, despite being overtaken by Sunderland. The home crowd waited nervously for confirmation from results elsewhere before finally celebrating another European campaign.

Attention at United now shifts toward strengthening the squad for a demanding season ahead. Midfield reinforcements remain the priority, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson reportedly the leading target. Atalanta midfielder Ederson and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes are also being considered as Carrick prepares for the challenges of competing across multiple competitions next season.
