France defender Ibrahima Konate has made it clear that his team will head into Tuesday’s World Cup semifinal against Spain with confidence rather than fear, while acknowledging the challenge posed by one of the tournament’s strongest sides.
Speaking on Sunday, Konate said France respects Spain’s quality but will not be intimidated as the two European heavyweights battle for a place in the World Cup final.
“You cannot fear anyone,” Konate told a press conference. “We will now prepare as best as possible and hope the result in the end will favour us.”
Spain has been one of the standout teams at the tournament, conceding only one goal on its journey to the last four as it chases a second World Cup title. France, meanwhile, arrives with an impressive pedigree, having won the tournament in 2018 and finished runner-up four years later.
The upcoming semifinal also carries recent history. France has suffered defeats to Spain in the Euro 2024 semifinals and last year’s Nations League semifinals, adding another layer of intrigue to the contest.
Konate praised Spain’s collective strength rather than focusing on any one individual.
“Spain is an exceptional team, with a lot of individual quality, so we won’t be focusing on just one player even though Lamine (Yamal) is a great player,” he said.
France’s preferred central defensive pairing of Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba has started throughout the tournament, while Konate featured briefly as a substitute in the victory over Norway during the final group-stage match.
Despite the prospect of reaching a fifth World Cup final, Konate insisted the squad is not looking beyond the semifinal.
“We are staying humble, we won’t fall into that trap,” he said.
Spain’s defensive record presents a significant obstacle for France, while winger Lamine Yamal has emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest attacking threats. His ability to draw defenders out of position and create space for teammates has earned praise and made him a key player to watch.
Fellow France defender Maxence Lacroix echoed Konate’s confidence while stressing the respect Spain has earned.
“I would not say ‘fear’ but we are conscious of their quality,” Lacroix said. “They have won all their matches (except a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in the group), so we respect them. They have high quality players but we want to win.”
He added that France is prepared for the challenge posed by Lamine.
“We will defend well, the best,” Lacroix said. “Lamine is a very good player and he has shown he can hurt teams at this World Cup. We will do the work that is needed.”
