Fulham Reignite Talks with Manchester United for Scott McTominay Amid Napoli Interest Fading

Fulham have resumed discussions with Manchester United over the potential transfer of Scott McTominay, as the player’s rumoured move to Napoli appears increasingly uncertain. The 27-year-old Scottish midfielder has been linked with an exit from Old Trafford this summer, with just under a year left on his contract, fueling speculation about his future.

McTominay has been a topic of interest for several clubs, with Manchester United initially rejecting two bids from Fulham earlier in the transfer window. United have set a price tag of around £25 million for the midfielder, a valuation that Fulham, who have long admired the player, have yet to meet. However, recent developments suggest that the Cottagers may be ready to make an improved offer, provided United show some flexibility in their asking price.

Napoli, who emerged as frontrunners for McTominay’s signature in recent days, now face a setback in their pursuit. Reports suggest that McTominay has reconsidered his options and is leaning towards remaining in the Premier League, casting doubt on a potential move to the Serie A giants. Furthermore, Napoli’s transfer plans seem to hinge on the sale of their star striker Victor Osimhen, whose own future is in limbo amid interest from Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, offered no concrete update on the club’s efforts to secure McTominay or his Scotland teammate Billy Gilmour, stating, “They are good, strong players. Let’s see what happens in the next few days. It’s useless to make forward momentum today there is the game and after the game, we will think about the market.”

This uncertainty has opened the door for Fulham to make another approach for McTominay, with Sky Sports reporting that the West London club has reopened talks with Manchester United. Fulham are reportedly prepared to increase their bid if United are willing to negotiate a lower price than their initial valuation.

Despite Napoli’s potential withdrawal from the race, Fulham may still face competition from other Premier League clubs. The Sun reports that Crystal Palace and Brighton have also expressed interest in signing McTominay, adding further intrigue to the ongoing transfer saga.

McTominay’s future remains a key talking point as the summer transfer window draws closer to its deadline. Last season, he nearly left Old Trafford for West Ham but opted to stay, subsequently delivering his best campaign yet by scoring 10 goals in 43 appearances—only outperformed by teammates Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes.

However, the current season has seen McTominay start Manchester United’s first two games on the bench, suggesting his role in Erik ten Hag’s plans may be diminished. United’s next match, a trip to Brighton, could further shape the dynamics of McTominay’s future as the transfer window edges towards its close.
