As the October international break looms, Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany cannot afford any missteps. 

With matches against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland, the task seems straightforward, but Die Mannschaft are under pressure after a shock loss to Slovakia earlier in the group stage. 

Another slip could leave them relying on other teams’ results to challenge Slovakia for the top spot.

Germany’s recent form is shaky, with only one win in five competitive matches. They need consecutive victories for the first time since November last year to regain momentum.

Luxembourg, ranked 96th globally, is an untested opponent in competitive fixtures. Though the microstate has shown resilience, defeating Sweden recently but remaining winless in their last five, Germany will back themselves to secure a result.

Germany already faced Northern Ireland this campaign, winning 3-1. Northern Ireland have proven competitive, beating Luxembourg and narrowly losing 2-1 to Denmark in Copenhagen. 

While Germany are favorites, they must start stringing wins together to solidify their position. If both Germany and Slovakia win their remaining games, the group’s top spot will be decided when they clash on the final matchday next month.

Adding to Nagelsmann’s challenges, in-form Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade is doubtful for the Luxembourg match due to flu-like symptoms.

As Germany’s most prolific striker currently, his potential absence for the Belfast trip is a concern. Meanwhile, veteran goalkeeper Oliver Baumann has withdrawn due to illness, with SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu earning his first senior call-up as a replacement.

Germany’s schedule kicks off with Luxembourg at home on Friday, October 10th, followed by a trip to Belfast’s Windsor Park to face Northern Ireland on Monday, October 13th. 

With the stakes high, Nagelsmann’s squad must deliver to keep their hopes of topping the group alive.
