Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has backed Arsenal to win the Premier League title this season following their impressive 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
The former England captain believes Mikel Arteta’s side have the strength, unity and resilience required to overcome their rivals and secure the championship.
Arsenal claimed the crucial victory through Kai Havertz’s first-half goal, moving to the top of the table after Manchester City suffered a surprise home defeat against Brighton.
Gerrard praised the Gunners for their disciplined performance, describing their ability to win difficult away matches as a key characteristic of potential champions.
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard said Arsenal’s determination and togetherness had helped them overcome a challenging test at Anfield.
He added that such narrow victories could prove more important at the end of the season than matches in which teams record convincing wins by four or five goals.
Despite backing Arsenal to lift the trophy, Gerrard identified Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool as the three main challengers capable of pushing the Gunners throughout the campaign.
He believes the quality and depth of these squads could see them separate themselves from the rest of the competition as the 38-game season progresses.
Gerrard also praised Brighton following their impressive victory over Manchester City, which moved Fabian Hurzeler’s side into third place.
He believes Brighton can compete for a Champions League qualification spot and could put pressure on the established top teams as the season develops.
However, the former Liverpool captain stopped short of describing Brighton as genuine title contenders.
He argued that Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea possess the squad depth needed to maintain a challenge over the full campaign, although he expects Brighton to remain competitive.
Gerrard maintained that Arsenal remain his favorites to win the league, insisting he has not changed his prediction from the beginning of the season.
With the title race still developing, the Gunners will look to build on their Anfield triumph as they pursue their first Premier League crown since 2004.
