Everton midfielder Jack Grealish has confirmed that his season is officially over after undergoing surgery on a stress fracture in his foot, dealing a serious blow to his hopes of returning to the England squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
The 30-year-old, currently on loan at Everton from Manchester City, sustained the injury during Everton’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Aston Villa last month. At the time, Grealish was enjoying a strong run of form and had been a key creative presence in midfield.
Across all competitions, Grealish made 22 appearances for Everton this season, scoring two goals and providing six assists. Those performances had sparked growing discussion around a possible recall to the England national team, especially with the World Cup approaching. However, the injury has now ended any chance of him featuring again this season.
Grealish confirmed the news himself through a message on social media, expressing his disappointment but also striking a note of determination. “Didn’t want the season to end like this but that’s football, gutted,” he wrote. “Surgery done and now all focus on getting back fit. I know for sure I will come back fitter, stronger and better than before.”
The setback is particularly frustrating given Grealish’s decorated career at club level. During his time at Manchester City, he won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup, establishing himself as one of the most successful English players of his generation. His experience and versatility had made him a potential option for England as they prepare for the biggest international tournament.
Grealish last represented England in October 2024 under caretaker manager Lee Carsley. With his recovery expected to rule him out of contention, his chances of making the squad for the FIFA World Cup now appear slim.
The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico and the United States. For Grealish, attention will now turn fully to rehabilitation, with the midfielder determined to return stronger despite a season ending in disappointment.
