The Norwegian striker muscled his way through the Brentford defence in the ninth minute, latching onto a lofted pass from Josko Gvardiol before smashing his shot past Caoimhin Kelleher. It was a moment of trademark strength and precision from the forward, who continues to haunt Premier League defenders with his clinical touch.
For much of the first half, City’s dominance was total. Brentford failed to register a single touch inside the visitors’ penalty area as Guardiola’s men controlled possession and dictated the tempo. Yet despite their intricate passing, City lacked ruthlessness in front of goal. Phil Foden missed a decent chance, while Tijjani Reijnders was denied by a sharp save from Kelleher.
City’s rhythm was disrupted midway through the half when Rodri, who endured a long spell on the sidelines last season due to a knee injury, pulled up clutching his hamstring and had to be substituted. His departure cast a shadow over what had otherwise been a smooth first period for the champions.
After the break, Brentford finally began to show more intent. Igor Thiago was presented with a golden opportunity to level the score when he broke through City’s back line, but his tame shot was comfortably saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Michael Kayode later headed over from a promising position as the hosts launched a series of direct attacks in the closing stages.
Guardiola, celebrating his 250th Premier League victory in charge of City, cut a visibly anxious figure on the touchline as Brentford pushed for an equaliser. City’s defence wobbled under the pressure, and hearts were in mouths in the final minute when Donnarumma’s clearance rebounded off Kevin Schade and rolled narrowly wide of the post.
The win extends City’s unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches, taking them to 13 points from seven games — three behind early leaders Arsenal heading into the international break. While the performance was far from their fluent best, Haaland’s scoring form remains a reassuring constant as City navigate a transitional phase.
