Italian midfielder Jorginho believes that he is the primary contender for the Ballon d’Or this season. He pointed out how he has more trophies than anyone else in the last season.
The Italian midfielder has enjoyed great success in the last few months. At first, he played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s Champions League against Manchester City. Then followed it up with consistent performances for Italy and guided them to their second European Championship after an intense penalty shootout win against England.
The Chelsea midfielder feels that he has a chance of being named as the best player of the year. Mainly in the wake of his consistent performances at the base of midfield which led to success at Chelsea and also for Italy.
“We all have dreams,” the Brazil-born playmaker told SporTV. “But, I’ll be honest, it depends on the criteria that the decision is based on.
“If we’re talking about talent then I know I’m not the best in the world. But if it’s going on titles, then nobody has won more than I have this season.
“How could I compare myself to [Lionel] Messi, Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo? They’ve got completely different characteristics to me. But, I repeat, it depends on the criteria.”
After a busy footballing season there are several players who are contesting for the special bestowed by France Football. But Jorginho feels that he is right in the mix to win the prestigious award for winning so many accolades this season.
The Ballon d’Or was called off last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic when Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski was presumed to be the front runner for the award. The
Pole was in front mainly because of the frustrating campaigns for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However this time the award is set to be back and some of the top players will be back contesting for it.
Lionel Messi will also be in the mix as he has won the Copa del Rey with FC Barcelona and followed it up with a historic Copa America triumph beating Brazil at the Maracana.
The FC Barcelona man was the highest scorer in the continental tournament with four goals and was the highest assists provider with five assists. He also won the best player award raising his case for the Balon d’Or award.
