Canada’s historic qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been accompanied by a sense of disappointment after the co-hosts surrendered the chance to continue playing on home soil. 

A 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final Group B match saw Jesse Marsch’s side finish second in the standings, ending hopes of remaining in Vancouver for the next phase of the tournament.

Had Canada avoided defeat and secured top spot in the group, they would have played their Round of 32 match in Vancouver and potentially remained there for a last-16 fixture. 

Instead, the loss means they must travel to Los Angeles, where they will face South Africa on Sunday in their first knockout match at a World Cup.

Despite the setback, head coach Jesse Marsch urged his players and supporters to focus on the bigger achievement. 

The former Leeds United manager, who has guided Canada beyond the group stage of a World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history, admitted the team fell short of one of its objectives but stressed that a major opportunity still lies ahead. 

He said Canada remain determined to inspire the country and continue their remarkable tournament run.

Canada’s group-stage campaign began with a draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto before an emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver boosted their qualification hopes. 

Although the defeat to Switzerland prevented them from winning the group, the team still achieved its primary goal of reaching the knockout rounds and establishing itself among the tournament’s surprise performers.

Striker Jonathan David described the mood in the camp as one of “mixed emotions.” While delighted to have progressed, he acknowledged the disappointment of leaving behind the passionate home support that had driven the team throughout the group stage. 

David praised Canadian fans for creating an electric atmosphere and said the squad would quickly shift its focus toward preparing for the challenge posed by South Africa.
