It has been a frustrating season for Celtic full-back Alistair Johnston, with injuries derailing what was expected to be a prominent campaign at Parkhead.
Widely tipped as a future leader in the dressing room, the 27-year-old Canadian has instead spent much of the season sidelined.
He underwent surgery to address a persistent issue, only to suffer another setback in his very first match back against Sturm Graz.
Now, the appointment of Wilfried Nancy as Celtic’s new head coach offers Johnston genuine hope of an immediate reintegration.
Having played under Nancy at CF Montréal, the defender already enjoys a strong relationship with the incoming manager, which should ease his return whenever he is declared fully fit.
Speaking to the media shortly after Nancy’s appointment was confirmed, Johnston provided an optimistic update on both his recovery and his ambitions for the remainder of the campaign.
He revealed that the recent surgery had been necessary but successful, adding that he was feeling significantly better and confident it would prevent any further re-injury.
Johnston expressed hope that he would be ready to feature again in the second half of the season, allowing him a strong run of games ahead of next summer’s home World Cup in Canada and the United States.
Missing out on the tournament, which will be co-hosted by his country, would be heartbreaking, he acknowledged.
With Nancy now at the helm and his body responding well post-operation, Johnston believes he can still play a key role for club and country in the months ahead.
For now, Celtic turn attention to Europa League action on Thursday as they host Roma. The Hoops will be looking to bounce back from the defeat against Hearts over the weekend.
As for Nancy, he will hope his players adapt quickly to his new system to keep Celtic back on track.
