Mohamed Salah has been left out of Liverpool’s squad for their Champions League match away to Inter Milan following an explosive public interview in which he claimed he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club and that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down.
The decision was taken with the full backing of Slot and is understood to be in the best interests of all parties at this time.
Sources close to the club confirmed that no formal disciplinary action will be taken against the 33-year-old forward, despite the timing and nature of his remarks.
However, Liverpool believe a short spell away from selection will help ease tensions. Salah also looks set to miss Saturday’s Premier League clash with Brighton before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations next Monday.
Salah gave his interview after being an unused substitute in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United, the third consecutive match in which he failed to start.
He had previously appeared only as a substitute in a draw with Sunderland and was left on the bench entirely for the win over West Ham.
His last start came in a Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven, while his most recent goal was scored against Aston Villa on 1 November.
Despite the current situation, Salah trained with his Liverpool team-mates on Monday morning, suggesting the door has not been closed on his future at Anfield.
The Egyptian is not actively seeking a January exit, and there are no plans for his early release ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations before the agreed December 15 date.
Salah remains one of Liverpool’s most decorated players, having scored 250 goals in 420 appearances since joining from Roma in 2017.
His 29 league goals last season helped Liverpool win the Premier League title, and he signed a new two-year contract in April.
While the current standoff has cast doubt over his immediate future, the club still believes there is a pathway to reconciliation under Arne Slot.
