Juventus have announced the appointment of former Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti as their new manager until the end of the season. The 66-year-old takes over following the dismissal of Igor Tudor, who was sacked after the team’s defeat to Lazio on Sunday.
Tudor’s short stint in charge came to an end after an eight-match winless run that left the club struggling in both Serie A and the Champions League. The Croatian had joined Juventus in March as a replacement for Thiago Motta, but despite early optimism, results quickly deteriorated.
Spalletti’s arrival marks the latest chapter in an illustrious career spanning more than two decades in management. He famously guided Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years during the 2022-23 season, earning widespread acclaim for his attacking style and ability to rejuvenate squads. His success in Naples led him to take over the Italian national team, following the departure of Roberto Mancini.
During his time with Italy, Spalletti helped the Azzurri secure qualification for Euro 2024, though their campaign ended in the last 16 with a loss to Switzerland. His tenure was cut short earlier this year after a disappointing start to World Cup qualifying, which included a defeat to Norway. The result left Italy at risk of missing a third consecutive World Cup, prompting his dismissal in June.
At club level, Spalletti brings a wealth of experience. In addition to Napoli, he has previously managed Inter Milan, Roma, and Udinese, and also achieved success abroad by winning the Russian Premier League twice with Zenit St Petersburg.
Juventus will be hoping that Spalletti’s tactical expertise and motivational skills can revive their season. The club currently sits seventh in Serie A, six points behind leaders Napoli after nine games. Interim boss Massimo Brambilla guided the side to a 3-1 victory over Udinese on Wednesday, but Juventus remain far from their usual standards.
In Europe, their struggles have continued. The team is currently 25th in the Champions League league phase, with just two points from their opening three matches. Spalletti’s immediate challenge will be to steady the squad, restore confidence, and close the gap on the top teams both domestically and internationally.
