Kai Havertz haunts former club with late penalty

In a pulsating Champions League last-16 first leg at BayArena, Arsenal narrowly avoided defeat against a resilient Bayer Leverkusen, thanks to a dramatic late penalty from Kai Havertz that secured a 1-1 draw.

The German side, under Kasper Hjulmand, appeared poised to carry a slender advantage into the return fixture at the Emirates Stadium after Robert Andrich’s second-half header.

However, Havertz, returning to face his old employers, kept his composure from the spot in the 89th minute to level the scores and keep the tie finely balanced.

The match began with Leverkusen asserting early dominance, pressing high and creating chances.

Christian Kofane tested Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya with a sharp effort in the seventh minute, forcing a diving save.

Moments later, Ibrahim Maza unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that sailed just over the bar, signaling the hosts’ intent to capitalize on their home advantage.

Arsenal absorbed the pressure but nearly broke through on a swift counterattack in the 19th minute.

Viktor Gyokeres cleverly laid off the ball to Gabriel Martinelli, whose right-footed curler cannoned off the crossbar, leaving the Leverkusen defense relieved.

The second half exploded into life right from the whistle. Leverkusen executed a clever corner routine, with Martin Terrier’s looping header requiring another acrobatic tip-over from Raya just 10 seconds after the restart.

From the subsequent corner, Alejandro Grimaldo delivered a pinpoint cross to the back post, where Andrich evaded markers Eberechi Eze and Jurrien Timber to nod home the opener, sending the home crowd into raptures.

Arsenal pushed for an equalizer, but squandered a prime chance six minutes from time when an unmarked Timber headed over from close range following a well-worked set piece.

Undeterred, the Gunners persisted, and their persistence paid off in the dying moments.

The dynamic Noni Madueke danced inside the box, drawing a clumsy foul from Malik Tillman. Havertz stepped up, coolly slotting the penalty past Janis Blaswich into the bottom-left corner.

This result leaves everything to play for in the second leg, with Arsenal grateful for Havertz’s heroics against his boyhood club.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, will rue missed opportunities but remain confident in their ability to challenge on English soil.

The tie exemplifies the unpredictability of European football, where late twists can redefine narratives.

Both teams displayed tactical acumen and individual brilliance, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion.

Arteta praised his side’s resilience, while Hjulmand highlighted Leverkusen’s control for much of the game. Fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating the rematch.
