Experienced England defender Kyle Walker has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect after a distinguished 14-year career with the England men’s national football team.
The 35-year-old right-back earned 96 caps for his country and represented England at five major tournaments, bringing an end to a career that began with his debut against Spain national football team in November 2011.
Walker described his time with England as a “whirlwind journey” and said he was proud of what he achieved wearing the national shirt.
Walker made his final international appearance in a friendly against the Senegal national football team in June 2025 at the City Ground.
Reflecting on his decision, he said stepping away from the international stage would give him closure after years of representing his country at the highest level.
During his international career, Walker featured at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and at the European Championships in 2016, 2021 and 2024.
Under former England manager Gareth Southgate, he played a key role in helping England reach consecutive European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024, although the team finished as runners-up on both occasions.
His performances also earned him places in UEFA’s team of the tournament at the Euros, and he served as vice-captain during the 2024 competition.
Walker said the England squad of his era worked hard to change perceptions of the national team and the pressure surrounding it.
He noted that players wanted to reshape how the media and supporters viewed English football, while still recognising the responsibility that comes with representing the country.
He added that wearing the England shirt remained a privilege shared only by a select group of players.
His decision also comes after new England manager Thomas Tuchel left him out of a recent squad, with younger options emerging in the right-back position.
Among those expected to take on a bigger role is Reece James, who is widely seen as a potential successor in the position Walker held for much of the past decade.
Walker leaves international football just four appearances short of reaching 100 caps, but his legacy remains significant.
