Newcastle United were denied a famous victory as Lamine Yamal converted a dramatic stoppage-time penalty to secure a 1-1 draw for FC Barcelona against Newcastle United in their UEFA Champions League clash at St James’ Park.
The hosts had looked set for a memorable European night after dominating much of the contest and finally breaking the deadlock late in the game.
Newcastle’s pressure paid off in the 86th minute when Harvey Barnes volleyed home from close range after a precise cross from Jacob Murphy, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Throughout the match, Newcastle’s intensity and organisation caused problems for Barcelona, who struggled to create clear chances.
The Spanish side appeared unusually subdued and spent long periods defending against a Newcastle side determined to make their home advantage count.
Barcelona, however, rescued a point in dramatic fashion deep into stoppage time. With the clock beyond the allotted added minutes, Dani Olmo was brought down inside the penalty area by defender Malick Thiaw, giving the visitors a last-gasp opportunity to equalise.
Teenage star Yamal stepped up under immense pressure and calmly sent goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way, placing the ball into the bottom corner to silence the home crowd and salvage a draw for Barcelona.
The late equaliser was a crushing blow for Newcastle, who had looked poised to secure a famous win against the Spanish giants.
Despite the disappointment, their strong performance leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in Barcelona.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich delivered a dominant performance with a 6-1 victory over Atalanta.
Early goals from Josip Stanisic, Michael Olise, and Serge Gnabry put the visitors firmly in control within the opening 25 minutes, before further strikes from Nicolas Jackson, Olise again, and substitute Jamal Musiala completed the rout. Mario Pasalic scored a late consolation for the Italian side.
In Madrid, Atletico Madrid overwhelmed Tottenham Hotspur in a high-scoring encounter that finished 5-2.
Marcos Llorente opened the scoring before Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead, capitalising on defensive errors from Spurs.
Further goals from Julian Alvarez, who scored twice, and Robin Le Normand extended Atletico’s advantage, while Tottenham responded through Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke in a chaotic contest marked by costly mistakes at the back.
