Harry Kane produced two late goals to rescue England from a stunning World Cup exit, as Thomas Tuchel’s side came from behind to beat DR Congo in Atlanta and book their place in the last 16.
England looked set for one of the biggest upsets in their World Cup history after Brian Cipenga gave DR Congo an early lead. Tuchel’s team struggled to find a response for much of the contest and were just 15 minutes away from an embarrassing elimination.
DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi delivered an outstanding performance, making a series of impressive saves to frustrate England’s attack. He denied both Jude Bellingham and Kane during a dominant display between the posts, keeping his side in front for most of the game.
England were also handed a major reprieve just before half-time when Yoane Wissa struck the post with what appeared to be a simple opportunity to double DR Congo’s advantage. The miss proved crucial, allowing England to stay within touching distance.
With pressure mounting, captain Kane stepped up when his team needed him most. He powered home a header in the 75th minute from substitute Anthony Gordon’s cross to finally beat Mpasi and restore hope for England.
The decisive moment arrived four minutes from time. Kane collected the ball on the edge of the area, turned away from his marker, surged forward and unleashed a powerful right-foot strike into the top corner. His fifth goal of the tournament completed a dramatic turnaround and secured England’s passage to the knockout stage.
Gordon also played a key role after coming off the bench, contributing to both of Kane’s goals and helping change the momentum of the match.
Despite the victory, England’s overall display raised concerns. Tuchel’s side appeared disorganised for long periods, with defensive vulnerabilities and a lack of fluency threatening to end their campaign. Kane’s brilliance ultimately masked an otherwise disappointing performance.
England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the last 16 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Monday, 6 July (01:00 BST). The venue carries historic significance for England, having been the site of their 1986 World Cup quarter-final defeat to a Diego Maradona-inspired Argentina.
While England advance, their display is unlikely to intimidate Mexico, who will take confidence from the weaknesses exposed before Kane’s late heroics transformed the outcome.
