Klopp confirms Alisson’s absence from Community Shield clash

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker would not be in goal when the Reds face Manchester City in the first competitive fixture of the season when both sides face off in the Community Shield on Sunday at King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp revealed on Thursday that Allison’s absence is due to injury; the Brazilian goalkeeper last played for Liverpool in their 4-0 defeat to Manchester United in their first pre-season game of the summer in Bangkok.

However, the goalkeeper is not the only absentee for Liverpool, with Portuguese forward Diogo Jota also expected to be out.

“No, Alisson and Diogo have no [chance]. Ali trained today more than the day before, so he will definitely be available for Fulham, but not for the weekend. And the same for Diogo. Diogo was not here with us, so how could he play a football game? That will take a while, unfortunately. That’s it.” Klopp said.

Nevertheless, Alisson Becker is expected to feature in Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Fulham next week.

Alisson helped Liverpool to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup double last season. He was also in goal for their UEFA Champions League final loss to Real Madrid in Paris.

On the other side of Merseyside, Everton has signed Dwight McNeil from Burnley on a five-year contract. The 22-year-old joined on a deal worth £20M from Turf Moor after the Clarets got relegated last season.

McNeil played 140 games for the Clarets, missing just two Premier League matches for them since December 2018.

He joins ex-Burnley teammate James Tarkowski, who also moved to the Goodison Park this summer, and Ruben Vinagre as their third addition this summer.

Ruben Vinagre is on loan at Everton from the Portuguese club side Sporting Lisbon.
