West Ham United have bolstered their defensive ranks by signing Kyle Walker-Peters on a free transfer following his departure from Southampton. The 28-year-old full-back has penned a three-year deal with the Hammers, bringing Premier League experience and a desire to help push the club forward under new manager Graham Potter.
Walker-Peters, who has earned two caps for England, arrives after making over 200 appearances for Southampton. He initially joined the Saints on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020 before securing a permanent move later that year. Despite being a regular fixture at St Mary’s, he opted to leave following the club’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season.
West Ham manager Graham Potter expressed his admiration for the defender, calling him a player of “really good pedigree” and “a top professional.”
“He is a player I’ve always thought highly of and been impressed by whenever he has faced one of my teams,” said Potter. “He has a really good pedigree, a top professional who has established himself as a respected Premier League player and still has his best years in front of him.”
Walker-Peters had been close to joining Turkish club Besiktas, managed by former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, the deal fell through after he delayed his medical amid growing interest from West Ham. Besiktas subsequently announced they were no longer pursuing the player.
Reflecting on his decision, Walker-Peters cited a conversation with Potter as a pivotal moment.
“I spoke to Graham Potter and he was a big, big part of me making the decision,” said the defender. “I’ve always liked his style as a coach, and I think it will suit me well. Every team wants to win trophies and West Ham have that ambition. From speaking to Graham, he wants to create something special, and hopefully I can be a part of that.”
Walker-Peters is West Ham’s third defensive signing of the summer. The club previously secured Senegalese centre-back El Hadji Malick Diouf from Slavia Prague for £19 million and made Jean-Clair Todibo’s loan from Nice a permanent move. On the outgoing front, West Ham sold Ghanaian winger Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham Hotspur in a £55 million deal.
