La Liga has raised concerns over the growing financial influence of the Premier League, warning that the English top flight’s spending spree is inflating the global transfer market and making it increasingly difficult for Spanish clubs to compete.
League officials believe the trend is driving player valuations beyond their true market worth and placing added pressure on clubs across Europe.
Speaking on the issue, La Liga’s Deputy Director General for Institutional Affairs, Marta Alonso, said Spanish clubs are expected to spend around €800 million during the current transfer window, with Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona, and Atlético de Madrid leading the activity.
However, she argued that the Premier League’s spending has gone far beyond sustainable levels, noting that English clubs have already committed about €1.865 billion in transfers despite having another month remaining in the window.
Alonso warned that the financial muscle of English clubs is creating a transfer “bubble” by paying transfer fees and wages that exceed players’ actual market values.
According to her, the result is a tougher marketplace for Spanish clubs, which must now spend more to recruit quality players while also facing greater difficulty retaining homegrown talent tempted by lucrative offers from England.
Despite the challenging environment, Spain’s biggest clubs have remained active in the market.
Barcelona have invested heavily in new signings, while Real Madrid have strengthened their squad with several additions alongside free transfers.
Atlético Madrid have also surpassed the €100 million mark in spending, with clubs such as Real Betis and Getafe CF also reinforcing their squads after securing European qualification.
To counter the growing financial gap, La Liga says it will continue prioritising financial sustainability and talent retention.
Alonso explained that the league’s financial regulations have been adjusted to give clubs greater flexibility in renewing contracts and improving salaries for key players, while also making it easier to register emerging academy talents.
She stressed that investing in youth development is a more sustainable strategy than engaging in inflated bidding wars.
Alonso also dismissed the notion that transfer spending alone reflects the strength of a league, pointing to high-profile arrivals such as Kylian Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid without a transfer fee, as evidence of La Liga’s enduring appeal.
She maintained that the league’s long-term objective is to preserve competitive balance by developing and retaining elite talent rather than matching the Premier League’s financial power euro for euro.
