Leicester City Appoint Marti Cifuentes as New Manager on Three-Year Deal

Leicester City have announced the appointment of Marti Cifuentes as their new manager, with the 43-year-old Spaniard signing a three-year contract as the Foxes prepare for another Championship campaign. Cifuentes replaces Ruud van Nistelrooy at the helm, becoming Leicester’s sixth permanent manager in just over two years.

The East Midlands club find themselves back in the second tier less than a year after earning promotion under Enzo Maresca, who left last summer to take charge of Chelsea. Now, the burden of guiding Leicester back to the Premier League falls on Cifuentes, who joins from Queens Park Rangers. Leicester will pay QPR an undisclosed compensation fee for his services.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha expressed strong backing for the new appointment, stating, “Marti is an excellent fit. We felt strongly that bringing him to the club would help us to create the success we all want in the years ahead.”

During his time at QPR, Cifuentes earned praise for his ability to stabilize a struggling side. He took charge at Loftus Road in October 2023 when Rangers were languishing second from bottom. Under his guidance, QPR managed to avoid relegation, finishing 18th in his debut season and improving to 15th the following year.

However, his tenure ended abruptly when he was placed on gardening leave after a heavy 5-0 defeat to already-promoted Burnley in April. Despite that setback, Leicester see Cifuentes as a forward-thinking coach who can bring “a modern, progressive footballing philosophy” to the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes have had a turbulent managerial spell since winning the FA Cup in 2021, and Cifuentes becomes the latest name tasked with restoring stability and delivering promotion. With less than a month to go before the new season kicks off, his challenge is immediate and immense.

Cifuentes will have little time to settle in, as expectations remain high at a club still brimming with Premier League ambitions. With a squad full of top-tier experience and a fanbase eager for a swift return to the elite, the new manager’s mission is clear: return Leicester City to the Premier League, and do so with style.
