In a pulsating Premier League clash at Anfield, Liverpool squandered a two-goal lead as Arsenal fought back to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw. The match, watched by over 72,000 fans, showcased moments of brilliance, controversy, and intensity, ending with both teams settling for a point apiece in their race at the top of the table.
Liverpool dominated the first half, surging into a 2-0 lead within two minutes. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 20th minute, converting from Andy Robertson’s cross, before Luis Díaz doubled the advantage a minute later, assisted by Dominik Szoboszlai. The home side looked in complete control as Arsenal struggled to find their rhythm before the break.
Arsenal responded strongly in the second half. Gabriel Martinelli reignited their hopes in the 47th minute with a clinical header from a Leandro Trossard delivery. The visitors continued to press and were rewarded in the 70th minute when Mikel Merino scored the equaliser, capping a superb Arsenal comeback.
However, Merino’s night took a sour turn. Just nine minutes after leveling the game, he received a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Szoboszlai, reducing Arsenal to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Gunners held firm, with their defense repelling several Liverpool attacks in the closing stages.
Liverpool thought they had snatched a late winner when Robertson found the net after a parried header from Van Dijk, but the goal was disallowed for a foul by Ibrahima Konaté on Myles Lewis-Skelly in the build-up. There was further drama as Arsenal nearly pulled off a last-minute winner through Martin Ødegaard, whose strike went inches wide.
The match ended with sections of Liverpool fans booing Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Liverpool defender Andy Robertson expressing disappointment with the English defender’s exit.
