Liverpool Beat Manchester United 4-0 to Move to the Top of Premier League

Liverpool go top of the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Manchester United. Mohamed Salah ended his scoring drought with two goals in the dominating performance.

“In midfield they make our life easier,” Salah said after the win. “We have a clean sheet here and there. Once we get the first goal, we want the second and the third. It was a top performance by us and hopefully we continue. I score many goals for this club. Sometimes you have bad luck. The most important thing is the team winning. We just need to focus on ourselves and the rest is not in our hands.”

Luis Diaz opened the scoring early for the Reds in the fifth minute behind a cross from Salah. Anfield was buzzing from the get-go.

“When we have these attackers in front of us and you see not only how they score but in defensive situations they want to get involved. It makes us perform,” Liverpool midfielder Thiago said. “I can’t be the one to judge my performance. It is one of the strongest performances at Anfield. We are not worried about where the goals come from. We are happy with all the strikers and how we play.”

United have now lost a combined 0-9 this season against Liverpool.

“Everybody is happy,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said.

According to OptaJoe stats on Twitter, this is second-heaviest defeat in the club’s league history; they lost to Sunderland 0-11 between 1892-1893.

United’s Cristiano Ronaldo did not play due to the passing away of one his children. The crowd, during the seventh minute, paid tribute to the player, his family and the situation at hand.

“My moment of the game was the seventh minute when all people showed pure class,” Klopp said. “Some things in life are much more important than football. We feel for Cristiano and his family.”

Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last eight Premier League matches against Manchester United, recording three draws and five wins.

“The fans don’t deserve us to play this way,” Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes said. “They deserve much more from us. The way they support us until the end. The way they stay, even after the whistle, to applaud us, they deserve much more from us. We know we have to raise our level higher. It is what it is.”

Manchester United are back in action on Saturday, 23 April against Arsenal.

Liverpool will match up with Everton on Sunday, 24 April, for their next league fixture as they aim for the PL title.
