Liverpool gets one point closer to title after Crystal Palace holds Arsenal

Arsenal and Crystal Palace, on Wednesday night, played a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League. Despite leading twice, the Gunners failed to hold on, with Jean-Philippe Mateta’s late equalizer canceling out their advantage. The result leaves Liverpool needing just one point from their next match against Tottenham to clinch the title.

Jakub Kiwior’s powerful header from Martin Ødegaard’s corner gave Arsenal an early lead in the third minute. Crystal Palace responded with a stunning volley by Eberechi Eze in the 27th minute, leveling the score and silencing the home crowd. Arsenal regained control before halftime when Leandro Trossard slotted in a second for the hosts, assisted by Jurrien Timber.

In the second half, Arsenal dominated possession, especially in the final 15 minutes, where they held 83% of the ball. However, they struggled to create clear-cut chances, and a patient Crystal Palace side waited for their moment. Mateta struck in the 83rd minute with a composed chipped finish past David Raya, marking the standout goal of the evening.

The match wasn’t without controversy, as VAR intervened in the 70th minute to overturn a potential third goal for Arsenal. While Timber was initially flagged for offside, VAR ruled him onside but determined that the ball had gone out of play earlier in the build-up, nullifying the goal.

Arsenal’s defensive performance came under scrutiny, with goalkeeper David Raya and defender William Saliba both facing criticism from fans for their roles in the goals conceded. Raya, known for his aggressive sweeper-keeper style, was caught out of position several times, while Saliba’s rare passing error proved costly.

With this result, Arsenal’s path to the title looks increasingly uncertain. Liverpool now sit just one point away from glory, and should they avoid defeat against Tottenham on Sunday, they will be crowned champions. Arsenal and Palace, meanwhile, turn their focus to their respective upcoming semi-final fixtures in the UCL and FA Cup, respectively.
