Liverpool F.C. were held to a frustrating 1–1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur F.C. at Anfield on Sunday after a dramatic late equaliser.
The hosts appeared set to secure all three points before a stoppage-time goal denied them victory and left supporters disappointed.
Liverpool took the lead in the 18th minute through Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored with an impressive free-kick to put the home side ahead.
The midfielder’s strike gave Liverpool early control and lifted the atmosphere inside Anfield as they looked to strengthen their push up the league table.
Despite trailing at the break, Tottenham gradually grew into the match during the second half.
Under interim manager Igor Tudor, Spurs increased the pressure on Liverpool’s defence and created several chances as the game approached its closing stages.
Tottenham finally found the breakthrough in the 90th minute when Richarlison equalised after being set up by Randal Kolo Muani.
The Brazilian forward finished calmly inside the box after Liverpool failed to deal with a long ball forward, sending the travelling supporters into celebration.
The draw proved costly for Liverpool, who dropped two points in their bid to climb back into the league’s top five.
For Tottenham, however, the result provided a valuable point as they continue their battle to avoid relegation in the Premier League.
Elsewhere, Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 3–1 at Old Trafford on Sunday to strengthen their push for UEFA Champions League qualification.
After a quiet first half that ended 0–0, the match came alive in the second half when Casemiro headed in a corner from Bruno Fernandes in the 53rd minute to give United the lead.
Villa responded in the 64th minute as Ross Barkley scored on his first league start in 14 months to level the match.
However, United quickly regained control when Matheus Cunha finished a precise through ball from Fernandes in the 71st minute.
Substitute Benjamin Šeško sealed the victory in the 81st minute with a deflected effort, continuing his strong form with eight goals in his last ten games.
The result keeps Manchester United, managed by Michael Carrick, in third place and extends their strong home run.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa, coached by Unai Emery, have now won only three of their last 12 league matches, raising concerns about their chances of qualifying for Europe’s top competition next season.
