Liverpool earned a crucial 1-0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday night, with Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header sealing a hard-fought win in a gripping Champions League clash between two European heavyweights.
The result handed Real their first defeat of the campaign and reignited Liverpool’s hopes of advancing from the group stage.
The match had all the ingredients of a European classic — high tempo, relentless pressing, and moments of brilliance at both ends. Arne Slot’s side, buoyed by ending a four-game Premier League losing streak just days earlier, showed renewed confidence and intensity throughout the contest.
Liverpool came close to breaking the deadlock several times in the first half. Dominik Szoboszlai, at the heart of everything positive for the hosts, saw multiple efforts denied by Thibaut Courtois, who was in outstanding form. The Belgian goalkeeper pulled off a reflex stop from Szoboszlai’s close-range shot after a clever cross from Florian Wirtz and later dived acrobatically to tip away another powerful strike.
The Reds thought they had won a penalty when Szoboszlai’s drive struck the arm of Aurelien Tchouameni, but after a VAR review, the referee waved play on, ruling it accidental. Real Madrid had their own moments, with Jude Bellingham testing Liverpool keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from a tight angle, only for the Georgian to make a sharp save with his foot.
The decisive moment arrived in the 61st minute. Szoboszlai delivered a perfect free kick into the area, and Mac Allister met it with a precise header that flew past Courtois, sparking wild celebrations from the Anfield faithful.
“I think it was a good game against a really good team,” Mac Allister told Amazon Prime after the match. “(Courtois) is a fantastic keeper — we all know. He had a few saves, so again I think he’s a really good keeper but today I think we were better and deserved to win.”
Real pressed for an equaliser, with Kylian Mbappe missing a golden chance when he fired wide of the far post. Liverpool could have doubled their lead late on when Mohamed Salah squared for Cody Gakpo, but Courtois again came to the rescue, parrying the shot before Salah’s follow-up was blocked.
The atmosphere turned fiery when former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, now at Real, came on late and was greeted with loud boos from his old supporters.
Liverpool’s victory moved them to nine points from four matches, level with Real but behind on goal difference. Federico Valverde admitted his side were punished for a lapse in concentration, saying, “We came here to try to win… we dropped three points because of a set piece that we need to defend better.”
