Manchester City breathed fresh life into the Premier League title race with an emphatic second-half display at Chelsea, punishing Arsenal’s stumble and turning up the pressure at the top of the table.
With Arsenal beaten at home by Bournemouth on Saturday, City arrived at Stamford Bridge knowing a win would significantly narrow the gap. They delivered in style, scoring three times after the break to move within six points of the leaders while still holding a game in hand.
For long periods of the first half, City looked below their usual standards. Pep Guardiola’s side were careless in possession and lacked sharpness in the final third, even though Rayan Cherki offered moments of promise. The talented midfielder fired a first-time strike from the edge of the area straight at Robert Sanchez, while Antoine Semenyo also went close with a similar effort that took a deflection and rolled wide.
Chelsea had their own chances before the interval and briefly thought they had made the breakthrough. Marc Cucurella produced a composed finish, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Pedro Neto also tested Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low drive, but the City goalkeeper reacted well to keep the game level.
After the break, though, the visitors took control and never looked back. Their breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Cherki, influential throughout the second half, whipped in an inviting cross that Nico O’Reilly met with a powerful header.
City quickly doubled their lead six minutes later, and once again Cherki was at the heart of the move. His perfectly weighted pass released former Chelsea player Marc Guehi, who calmly guided a low finish into the far corner. The goal sparked jubilant scenes among the away supporters and left the home side visibly shaken.
Chelsea’s resistance fully collapsed when Moises Caicedo was caught in possession deep inside his own half. Jeremy Doku seized the opportunity, driving forward before finishing confidently to put the result beyond doubt and complete a statement victory.
The defeat leaves Liam Rosenior’s team on a worrying run, with Chelsea now suffering a third consecutive league loss. For City, meanwhile, the timing of this win could hardly have been better.
Attention now turns to next Sunday, when City host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium in what is shaping up to be a defining clash in the title battle. With momentum now on their side, Guardiola’s men have made it clear that the race is far from over.
