Manchester City delivered a commanding second-half performance to defeat Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, strengthening their push in the Premier League title race.
After a goalless first half, City came alive after the break with three goals that underlined their dominance.
The breakthrough arrived in the 51st minute when Nico O’Reilly opened the scoring, finishing off a well-worked move assisted by Rayan Cherki.
Just six minutes later, Marc Guéhi doubled the visitors’ advantage, again set up by Cherki.
City’s slick passing and attacking fluidity proved too much for the hosts, who were unable to cope with the relentless pressure applied by Pep Guardiola’s side.
The third goal came in the 68th minute through Jérémy Doku, effectively sealing the victory.
From that point on, the match took on a one-sided feel, with City controlling possession and creating further chances, while Chelsea appeared out of ideas.
Despite late efforts to get Erling Haaland on the scoresheet, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez denied him, as the visitors comfortably saw out the remainder of the game.
The result moves Manchester City to within six points of league leaders Arsenal, with a game in hand, keeping the title race very much alive.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s third consecutive league defeat leaves their hopes of securing Champions League football fading, with concerns growing over their recent form.
Tottenham Hotspur began the reign of new head coach Roberto De Zerbi with a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, deepening their relegation concerns.
De Zerbi, appointed following the brief tenure of Igor Tudor, made five changes to the starting lineup but could not halt Spurs’ poor run, which now stretches to 14 Premier League matches without a win.
The decisive moment came just after the hour mark when Nordi Mukiele fired from distance, his effort taking a heavy deflection off Micky van de Ven to beat goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.
