Manchester City and Real Madrid will meet for the fourth consecutive season in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) knockout stages.
The two European giants will face off in the knockout play-off round, with the loser failing to reach the last 16. Manchester City, who struggled to overcome League One side Leyton Orient in the FA Cup on Saturday, will be looking to bounce back from a dismal run of form.
City’s recent performances have been marred by defensive frailties, conceding the opening goal in their last two home games. The team’s confidence has taken a hit, particularly after their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal in their last Premier League outing. Real Madrid, on the other hand, will be looking to capitalize on City’s vulnerabilities. The Spanish side has a strong record against English clubs in the UCL, having eliminated one in each of the last four campaigns.
Real Madrid’s recent form has been more encouraging, with the team battling back to secure a 1-1 draw against Atlético Madrid in La Liga. The result kept them top of the table, and they will now turn their attention to the UCL. However, Real Madrid’s record against English clubs away from home is not impressive, with nine wins, six draws, and 11 losses. This could give Manchester City a glimmer of hope ahead of the tie.
The two teams have a rich history in the UCL, with Real Madrid having eliminated Manchester City on three previous occasions. However, City did manage to dump Real Madrid out of the competition in the 2019/20 season, winning both legs 2-1. Players to watch in this tie include Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, who has a strong record against Real Madrid, and Rodrygo, who has scored four goals against City, including two last season.
City manager Pep Guardiola believes his team does not deserve to make the next round of the competition.
“We play the second game away because we were not good enough in the group stage. We didn’t deserve it [to go straight through to the last 16]. The team, our team, has something special, and hopefully, we can prove it tomorrow.” Pep Guardiola said.
