Manchester City have taken their first formal step in pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, but their opening offer has been rejected as negotiations between the clubs begin to gather pace ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Premier League champions have identified Anderson as a leading target as they look to strengthen their midfield options following the departure of club captain Bernardo Silva. City’s interest in the 23-year-old has been longstanding, and recent developments suggest their pursuit is now entering a crucial phase.
According to reports, there is a growing expectation that Anderson could leave Nottingham Forest this summer despite enjoying an outstanding campaign at the City Ground. The midfielder’s performances have significantly boosted his reputation over the past season, earning him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
While Anderson is currently focused on international duty, discussions between Manchester City and Nottingham Forest are expected to continue. The rejection of City’s first bid does not appear to have dampened their determination, with the club reportedly viewing the England international as the standout candidate to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s midfield.
Interest in Anderson has been intense, with reports indicating that the player is leaning towards a move to the Etihad Stadium rather than joining rivals Manchester United. Such a transfer would represent one of the most significant deals of the summer and could potentially set a new British transfer record. Any eventual fee may surpass the £105 million Arsenal paid West Ham United for Declan Rice in 2023.
Anderson’s rise has been remarkable since emerging from Newcastle United’s academy system. His development at Nottingham Forest has attracted admiration from several leading clubs, but Manchester City appear to be positioning themselves at the front of the queue.
City are also believed to admire Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, who has reportedly been monitored as a long-term option. However, Anderson remains their primary focus as they reshape their squad.
Elsewhere, Nico Gonzalez could leave the club if a suitable offer arrives after struggling for opportunities under Guardiola and missing out on Spain’s World Cup squad. City are additionally seeking a young right-back capable of developing into a long-term solution, despite Matheus Nunes impressing in the role after his conversion from midfield.
With several areas of the squad under review, Manchester City’s summer rebuild is beginning to take shape, and securing Anderson could be one of its defining moves.
