Liverpool has agreed a sensational deal to sign Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record fee of around £130 million ($175 million), according to reports from Sky Sports News and The Athletic.
The long-drawn negotiations, which have overshadowed much of this summer’s transfer activity, culminated late Sunday night, with sources confirming that the 25-year-old has committed to a long-term contract with the Anfield club.
An earlier £110 million bid from Liverpool was reportedly rejected earlier in August, adding fuel to what became one of the most closely watched sagas of the window.
While both Liverpool and Newcastle declined to comment officially, the move appears to be final as the transfer deadline looms on Monday.
Isak enjoyed a stellar 2024 season, netting 23 goals in the Premier League to help Newcastle finish fifth and secure a return to the UEFA Champions League. He also made history by scoring in the League Cup final against Liverpool, sealing Newcastle’s first domestic trophy in 70 years — a high point that now ironically marks his last major contribution to the club.
The final stages of the transfer were mired in tension. Isak did not join Newcastle’s pre-season tour and was reportedly made to train separately from the main squad. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe labeled the situation a “lose-lose,” as speculation swirled about the striker’s future and fans were left in the dark.
In a strongly worded statement released over the weekend, Isak criticized the club’s handling of his situation: “Newcastle broke promises and misled supporters. At this stage in my career, change is in the best interests of everyone.”
Liverpool, in the post-Jürgen Klopp era, has made a bold statement of intent with this record-breaking signing. The acquisition of Isak signals the club’s ambition to reassert itself at the top of English and European football, and to fill the attacking void left by aging stars and recent squad transitions.
As Isak prepares to don the iconic red shirt, Liverpool fans will hope the Swede’s goalscoring form continues at Anfield, and that his arrival sparks a new era of success on Merseyside.
