Manchester City sign Sergio Gomez as new left-back

Premier League Champions Manchester City have signed a defender Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht. He joined the Cityzens on a €13M four-year deal till 2026.

The Spain U21 international played for Anderlecht under former Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany who coached at the Belgian club side.

The defender will wear jersey number 21 at City, the same number he wore at the Belgium club. Gomez, who claimed to be greatly influenced by the feats of Vincent Kompany at City, said it’s an honor for him to play at the Premier League club.

“To be part of this club is a dream come true and something any young player would aspire to. I’m very happy that Manchester City is giving me the opportunity, and I’m going to try to give my best on the pitch. Hopefully, we can achieve great things together.” Gomez said.

Manchester City sold Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal, and an attempt to sign a replacement with Marc Cucurella didn’t work out as the former Brighton star joined Chelsea.

Sergio Gomez will be a backup to Joao Cancelo in the Manchester City squad as they continue to attempt to retain the league title they won last season.

Pep Guardiola’s side has won their first two matches of the 2022/2023 season with a 4-0 win over Bournemouth last weekend and a 2-0 victory over West Ham on opening weekend.

Manchester City will play Newcastle United next weekend.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s attempt to sign Adrien Rabiot from Juventus has been canceled after the Red Devils failed to agree on personal terms with the 27-year-old.

Although Manchester United matched the valuation of the midfielder by Juventus and agreed on a deal with the club, the midfielder would now see his contract through at the Old Ladies after United’s attempt to make him one of the highest earners could not sway him to the Premier League.
