Manchester United have officially announced the signing of winger Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in a deal worth an initial £65 million, potentially rising to £71 million with add-ons.
The 25-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, becoming the third addition to Ruben Amorim’s squad this summer.
Mbeumo’s arrival follows the signings of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha and Spanish left-back Diego Leon, as United continue their summer rebuild. The club’s pursuit of Mbeumo lasted over seven weeks, with their third and final offer eventually accepted by Brentford last week.
The deal marks a record sale for the Bees, surpassing the £40 million they received from Al-Ahli for Ivan Toney in 2024.
Speaking after his unveiling, Mbeumo expressed his joy at fulfilling a childhood dream. “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up.” He said.
The Cameroon international is expected to join the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, which begins on Thursday.
Mbeumo joined Brentford in 2019 from French club Troyes and played a pivotal role in their rise and stability in the Premier League.
Over six seasons, he scored 70 goals and provided 51 assists in 242 appearances for the club. Last season was his most prolific, recording a career-high 20 goals and seven assists in the league.
The winger’s pace, technical skill, and versatility on either flank are expected to add depth and dynamism to United’s attacking options.
His signing may also prompt further changes in the squad, with the futures of several wide players—such as Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford—currently uncertain.
Mbeumo’s arrival has been widely welcomed by fans and pundits, although questions remain about United’s need for a traditional striker.
Despite strengthening in wide areas, some analysts argue the club still lacks a consistent central goal scorer to partner Rasmus Højlund. Nonetheless, the addition of Mbeumo signals a strong intent from United to compete on all fronts in the upcoming season.
