Manchester United edge Rangers 2-1 in thrilling UEFA Europa League clash

Manchester United secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rangers at Old Trafford, thanks to a 92nd-minute winner from Bruno Fernandes. The win tightens United’s grip on a top-eight place in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) and puts them on the brink of automatic qualification.

The match got off to a nervy start for United, with European debutant Toby Collyer being caught in possession within the opening 10 minutes. However, Rangers were unable to capitalize on the mistake, and United gradually grew into the game. The hosts had the ball in the net from a corner, but Matthijs De Ligt’s header was controversially ruled out for a minor infringement.

United carried their momentum into the second half, with Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho both going close. Rangers’ goalkeeper Jack Butland was eventually beaten when he punched Christian Eriksen’s corner into his own net, giving United the lead. Despite being forced into three substitutions, including replacing star player Václav Černý, Rangers pushed hard for an equalizer.

The visitors’ efforts finally paid off two minutes from time, when Cyriel Dessers pounced on a weak piece of defending from Harry Maguire and drove an effort into the bottom corner. However, United produced a late winner typical of Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure, with Fernandes stroking a cultured volley on his 50th UEL appearance from Lisandro Martínez’s cross.

“We want to get through the Europa League and get to the final in Bilbao. We want to get top eight, so we don’t have to play two more games.” Fernandes said.

The win marks just United’s second victory in five home matches and is a significant boost to their UEL campaign. Rangers, meanwhile, will be left to rue their missed opportunities and will look to regroup for their next match.

Fernandes’ late winner was a fitting end to a thrilling match, and the Portuguese midfielder’s 50th UEL appearance will be one to remember. United’s victory sets them up nicely for their next match, while Rangers will be eager to bounce back from this narrow defeat.
