Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including a dramatic 87th-minute winner, as Real Madrid secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou, ending their rivals’ hopes of making Spanish football history.
Barcelona entered the contest looking to become the first team to win their opening 10 matches of a Spanish top-flight season. However, Hansi Flick’s men fell short of breaking the record of nine consecutive victories established by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 campaign.
The visitors took the lead in the 41st minute through a fortunate Mbappe goal. Gerard Martin attempted to clear Yan Diomande’s low delivery, but the ball struck the French forward and flew past goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
The opening goal sparked an entertaining spell before half-time. Mbappe nearly doubled his tally when his effort struck the post, while Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal missed a golden opportunity, directing his shot wide from close range.
Barcelona responded after the break and restored parity in the 61st minute. Captain Raphinha received a pass from Pedri before firing through Jude Bellingham’s legs into the far corner.
The hosts almost completed the turnaround moments later when Martin directed a header towards goal. However, Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin produced a spectacular one-handed save to keep the scores level.
With the match heading towards a draw, Mbappe delivered the decisive moment three minutes from time.
Bellingham displayed excellent footwork near the halfway line to launch an attack before substitute Eduardo Camavinga surged forward and squared the ball for Mbappe to finish into an empty net.
Real manager Jose Mourinho celebrated the late winner with a knee slide near the dugout followed by a fist pump.
The victory was particularly significant for Madrid, who were missing suspended forward Vinicius Jr and first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, ruled out through illness.
Lunin, making his first club appearance of the season, played a crucial role. The Ukrainian goalkeeper denied Anthony Gordon three times during the opening half before producing his outstanding stop against Martin.
Mbappe, meanwhile, continued his impressive individual record against Barcelona. Since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, the 27-year-old has scored eight goals in seven El Clasico appearances.
His latest double took his La Liga tally to 11 goals this season, with only Barcelona’s Raphinha ahead of him on 13.
Despite the defeat, Barcelona remain top of the standings after 10 matches, holding a two-point advantage over Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid sit third, another point behind, with Mbappe’s late heroics keeping them firmly in the title race.
