Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has taken his fight against a four-year doping ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, raising hopes of a potential early return to professional football.
The 25-year-old Ukraine international has been out of action for nearly 18 months following an “adverse finding in a routine urine test” in December 2024. That result triggered a provisional suspension, which was later followed by formal charges from the Football Association in June 2025. Mudryk subsequently received the maximum four-year ban, although the FA has not publicly disclosed specific details of the case.
Under standard procedures, such bans are typically backdated to the start of the provisional suspension, meaning Mudryk’s current eligibility to return would fall around December 2028. However, the appeal filed with CAS in Switzerland could significantly alter that timeline.
In a statement, CAS confirmed: “CAS confirms it has received an appeal by Mykhailo Mudryk against the FA, filed on 25 February 2026. The Parties are currently exchanging written submissions, and a hearing is yet to be scheduled.”
Sources close to the player suggest there is optimism that the ban could be reduced, potentially allowing Mudryk to resume playing as early as next season. The case is expected to hinge on the circumstances surrounding his exposure to meldonium, a cardiovascular drug known to enhance stamina and oxygen efficiency.
The BBC reports that Mudryk may have come into contact with the substance while on international duty with the Ukraine national football team in October 2024. The player has consistently denied any intentional wrongdoing. In his only public statement following the provisional suspension, he expressed “complete shock” and insisted he had “never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules.”
Mudryk’s legal defence is being handled by Morgan Sports Law, a firm with experience in high-profile doping cases involving athletes such as Paul Pogba, Tyson Fury, and Chris Froome.
Despite his absence from competitive football since November 2024, Mudryk is maintaining fitness by training with Uxbridge FC, supported by a private coaching setup.
Chelsea have declined to comment while proceedings are ongoing, and the FA has also remained silent due to the active legal process. As the appeal unfolds, Mudryk’s career hangs in the balance, with the final decision set to determine whether his lengthy exile will stand or be significantly reduced.
