Nottingham Forest’s aspirations for a top-four Premier League finish remain intact after a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, in a match that came alive in the second half following a cagey opening.
Forest fell behind after the break when Eberechi Eze calmly converted a penalty awarded via VAR. Goalkeeper Matz Sels was deemed to have fouled Tyrick Mitchell in the box, and Eze made no mistake from the spot, powering his shot into the left corner. His confident celebration captured the moment, as he puffed out his chest to the cheers of the home crowd.
But the Eagles’ joy was short-lived. Just four minutes later, Forest equalized through a clever finish by Murillo, who flicked Neco Williams’ driven strike past Dean Henderson, deflating the Selhurst Park atmosphere and restoring parity in a match that had been devoid of cutting edge in the first half.
The opening 45 minutes offered little for fans to cheer. Palace’s Daniel Munoz squandered a golden chance, volleying straight at Sels after a sublime Mitchell cross, while Anthony Elanga’s rapid counterattack ended with a tame shot at Henderson. Forest striker Chris Wood also felt aggrieved when he was pulled back by Munoz in the area, but referee Andrew Madley waved away appeals, and VAR saw no reason to intervene.
The second half brought urgency. Sels denied Ismaila Sarr one-on-one before Maxence Lacroix produced a critical block to thwart Wood from netting his 20th goal of the season.
Late drama unfolded when Palace thought they had clinched victory. Substitute Eddie Nketiah tapped in a deflected shot from Eze, but celebrations were swiftly halted by the offside flag.
The draw means Forest stay sixth in the table, just two points shy of Newcastle and Chelsea, who occupy the crucial fourth and fifth spots. With three games remaining, their Champions League dream is still within reach.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, remain comfortably mid-table in 12th. They are now just three points away from matching their best-ever Premier League points total of 49, achieved last season.
Despite the stalemate, the result leaves plenty to play for in the final stretch of the campaign.
