Newcastle United have begun early negotiations with Southampton over a potential move for England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The Magpies are exploring both loan and permanent options as they aim to strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of the new Premier League season.
Southampton, however, are believed to favour a permanent transfer and are likely to demand substantial terms for Ramsdale, who they signed from Arsenal for an initial £18 million in August 2024. Despite their recent relegation, the Championship club is holding firm on their valuation of the 26-year-old shot-stopper.
This latest development follows Newcastle’s failed attempt to sign Burnley’s James Trafford. The club had agreed a £27 million fee with Burnley before Manchester City exercised a matching rights clause, enabling them to bring their former academy graduate back to the Etihad. That twist has pushed Newcastle to accelerate talks for Ramsdale, as they continue searching for strong competition for current first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Ramsdale, who earned his last England call-up in March, endured a difficult campaign last season. He made 30 appearances for Southampton in the Premier League as they finished bottom of the table with just 12 points. A move to St James’ Park would not only allow him to remain in the top flight but also reunite him with Eddie Howe, who managed him during their time at Bournemouth.
The potential transfer is part of a broader effort by Newcastle to reshape their squad ahead of their Champions League campaign. With striker Alexander Isak attracting interest from Liverpool, Newcastle are bracing for possible changes in attack. Reports suggest RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko has been identified as a possible replacement if Isak were to depart.
Ramsdale’s arrival would offer experience and depth in a crucial position, especially given Newcastle’s increased fixture demands this season.
