Newcastle United secure UEFA Champions League football for next season

After two decades of ups and downs in the Premier League for Newcastle United, amidst several relegations from the Premier League and promotion back into the top flight, the Toons finally secured a return to Europe via the UEFA Champions League after Monday’s goalless draw at home to Leicester City with a game to spare.

Newcastle United, who missed the opportunity to win the Carabao Cup before losing to Manchester United, can now celebrate a major achievement in the 2022/2023 season.

After beating Brighton on Thursday, Newcastle needed just one more point to secure their UEFA Champions League place, and with relegation-threatened Leicester City as their opponents on Monday, it looked as though they would get beyond the single point.

However, after 90 minutes of play from both sides, it was Newcastle who rejoiced at the end of 90 minutes, with manager Eddie Howe admitting that it was a big relief to get over their line of UEFA Champions League qualification with a game to spare.

“It’s a big relief, actually, an amazing night to see the supporters. It is just a general reaction to what we’ve achieved – it is incredible. It’s been a great evening for us.” I have to compliment the whole squad because, physically, it’s been a big demand. They’ve coped with it really well. They’ve seen the fruits of their own labor, really; they’ve seen the results. That’s helped keep them focused and keep them on track.” Eddie Howe said

The result confirmed Newcastle cannot finish below fourth position even if they lose their final match of the season against Chelsea, with Manchester United yet to secure Champions League football for next season.

While Newcastle United has 70 points with a game left, Manchester United sit in third with 69 points, three above Liverpool in fifth, although Jurgen Klopp’s side have a single game left this season.

Leicester City they have to win their final game of the season and hope Everton and Leeds United do not get the three points against Bournemouth and Tottenham, respectively.
