Newcastle United are stepping up their efforts to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi this summer.
The 20-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young players after an outstanding season and an impressive FIFA World Cup with Switzerland.
Newcastle have already added Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur to their squad, and Manzambi is seen as another player who fits the club’s long-term recruitment strategy.
Reports suggest talks are continuing, although negotiations have taken longer than Newcastle had initially hoped.
Manchester United have also been linked with the Swiss midfielder, but Newcastle are believed to be in a strong position to complete the deal.
Manzambi began his football career in the youth academy of Swiss club Servette before joining Freiburg’s academy in 2023.
He was promoted to Freiburg’s reserve team in 2024 and earned a place in the first team later that same year.
The midfielder made his Bundesliga debut on August 21, 2024, during Freiburg’s 3-0 away defeat to Heidenheim.
He scored his first senior goal for the club on April 12, 2025, helping Freiburg claim a 2-1 away victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Manzambi became a regular starter during the 2025-26 season, making 47 appearances and contributing 16 goals and assists in all competitions.
He also played a key role in Freiburg’s Europa League campaign, scoring against Braga in the semi-final second leg as his side secured a 4-3 aggregate win to reach the final.
Although Freiburg finished as runners-up to Aston Villa, Manzambi’s performances earned him the Europa League Young Player of the Season award.
Newcastle are now hoping to secure the talented midfielder as they continue building a young squad with strong potential for the future.
