Ngumoha eager to display capabilities at Liverpool

Seventeen-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha says he is determined to “show everyone what I can do” for Liverpool after another eye-catching cameo in the Premier League. 

The teenager impressed in Sunday’s win at the City Ground, replacing Mohamed Salah late on and helping spark a surge that included a disallowed goal for Alexis Mac Allister. 

Though still only 17, Ngumoha’s confident display drew widespread praise and intensified calls for him to be given more minutes.

Ngumoha has so far played just 89 minutes in the Premier League this season but has been included in nearly every matchday squad.

Ngumoha first captured attention in August when he scored a dramatic 100th-minute winner at Newcastle to become Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer.

Since then, head coach Arne Slot has carefully managed his involvement, restricting his starts to domestic cup competitions while continuing to use him from the bench in league matches.

The club opted to create a pathway for the winger after allowing other attacking targets to move elsewhere last summer, signalling their long-term belief in his potential.

With competition fierce in Liverpool’s forward line, opportunities have been limited. Cody Gakpo has logged heavy minutes on the left, while Salah has endured a rare goal drought on the right.

Ngumoha, comfortable on either flank, showed against Nottingham Forest that he can stretch defences with pace and direct dribbling. “Every single time I’m called on, I want to impact the game,” he said, citing pressing, tackling and delivering into the box as ways to contribute.

Liverpool’s coaching staff are taking a cautious approach to his development, building his physical strength and off-ball awareness to prepare him for the demands of top-flight football. 

Ngumoha has two days a week off the training pitch as part of workload management and continues to play academy matches to maintain sharpness. 

He recently followed up a disallowed FA Cup goal with a standout performance at Under-21 level, underlining his determination to avoid stagnation.

Historically, few players have accumulated significant Premier League minutes before turning 18, though names such as Wayne Rooney and Gareth Barry were notable exceptions.
