Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes has lauded manager Luis Enrique for helping him develop his defensive skills.
The defender stated this in an interview with AFP on Monday, “before, he only thought about attacking, forgetting about his defensive duty.
Nuno Mendes, who joined Paris Saint-Germain from Sporting CP in the summer of 2021, has become a mainstay in the squad, adding more impetus to the club’s attack.
“At the beginning, I wasn’t very strong in defense. I knew how to attack with speed. Luis Enrique noticed that he helped me a lot defensively, and today I’m good on both sides.”
He further said he tries to balance the attacks with defense and rest a little when necessary.
Lauding the former Barcelona coach for doing a great job with the squad, he said he brought versatility to the squad, which he said will be developed further.
The 23-year-old Portuguese said his style of play also comes from him, knowing what he can do to improve, and Enrique has taught him a lot.
He further explained that before, in one-on-one defense, it was a bit difficult for him because he only thought about attacking.
“But he told me, ‘You have to defend better, and then I’ll give you the freedom to attack.
Mendes is still under contract with PSG until 2029, with an optional additional year.
Refusing to consider himself the number 1 in his position.
“I consider myself a good full-back, I don’t like to say that I’m the best. You have to show that on the pitch, and I always try to do that,” he added.
The 23-year-old defender has played 11 games for the Champions League holders this season, scoring three goals and recording the same number of assists.
