Igor Paixao has revealed that he plans to leave Olympique Marseille next summer.
Speaking after Marseille’s 2-0 win at Troyes on Sunday, the Brazilian striker said he had to respect the club by staying this summer, as they won’t be able to sign a replacement because of the transfer ban.
Marseille manager Bruno Genesio did everything he could to keep Paixao this summer, even as the club reached an agreement in principle with Sunderland for a 35 million euro transfer, the same amount the Ligue 1 club spent a year earlier to sign him.
The Brazilian was retained at all costs, with final approval from club owner Frank McCourt.
The Auriverde striker, in an interview with Canal Football Club, explained that the transfer ban on the club made him stay beyond last summer, thinking about the club’s best interests.
“Even if they sold me, they couldn’t have replaced me, which is important. It’s the right choice;; it’s clear I want to keep playing and give my best. This season, everything comes together for me to have an important role and help my team put OM back where they belong, at the top,” he added.
However, things haven’t gone as planned for the Brazilian since the start of the season. He is yet to score a single goal in six official matches.
While pointing out that wearing a jersey with so much history is a privilege and a responsibility, the striker said he has an additional responsibility at the club.
“I’m happy; Marseille is a great club. I love the way my family and I are treated here. In January, the teams are already formed; it’s difficult. There’s a better chance I’ll leave next summer, “ he whispered without any restraint.
After the victory at Troyes, Paixao did not hide his dissatisfaction that Genesio had to replace him after 87 minutes.
He said this is nothing serious,, as the coach is expected to be frustrated, but he can count on him to help the team when needed.
