United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Tottenham Hotspur, calling the prospect “not realistic” at this time.
The Argentine, who managed Spurs from 2014 to 2019, has been frequently mentioned in connection with the north London club since his departure.
The rumours intensified after Tottenham sacked manager Ange Postecoglou on Friday, despite his recent success in guiding the club to their first trophy in 17 years with a Europa League win.
However, Pochettino, who took over as U.S. national team coach in October 2024, has made it clear he is content in his current role.
“Today it’s not realistic,” said Pochettino following the U.S. team’s 2-1 loss to Turkey in Connecticut. “Look where I am. Look where we are. The answer is so clear. Since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list, but I am very happy now, and we cannot talk about this kind of thing.”
Pochettino has faced a mixed start to life as U.S. coach, with five wins and four losses in his first nine games. The team’s current three-match losing streak adds pressure ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico. Despite this, he appears committed to seeing the project through.
As Spurs look for Postecoglou’s replacement, Brentford manager Thomas Frank has emerged as a leading candidate.
Fulham’s Marco Silva is also reportedly under consideration. The club is seeking stability and long-term vision following another managerial change.
In other news, Wales international Ben Davies has extended his contract with Tottenham until the summer of 2026.
The 32-year-old defender remains the club’s longest-serving senior player, having made 358 appearances across all competitions since joining in 2014.
