Veteran midfielder James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 24-year Premier League career.
The former England international, who recently completed a three-year spell with Brighton, leaves the game as one of the most respected and accomplished figures in English football.
Milner’s retirement comes after he became the Premier League’s all-time appearance holder earlier this year.
The 40-year-old enjoyed a career that spanned six top-flight clubs, beginning with his debut for Leeds United as a teenager in 2002.
During his time in the Premier League, Milner established a reputation for versatility, consistency, and professionalism, earning widespread admiration from teammates, managers, and supporters alike.
He made his final league appearance for Brighton at the end of the 2025-26 season, taking his record tally to 658 Premier League matches.
Milner’s trophy-laden career included three Premier League titles, winning twice with Manchester City in 2012 and 2014 before helping Liverpool secure their first league crown in 30 years during the 2019-20 campaign.
He also played a key role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2019 and collected domestic cup honours with both City and Liverpool.
Reflecting on his retirement, Milner expressed gratitude for the opportunities football provided throughout his career.

After emerging as one of England’s brightest young talents at Leeds, Milner moved to Newcastle United following the Yorkshire club’s relegation in 2004.
He later joined Aston Villa before securing a move to Manchester City, where he became an important figure in the club’s rise to domestic dominance.
His move to Liverpool in 2015 further enhanced his legacy, with eight successful seasons at Anfield cementing his status as one of the Premier League’s most dependable performers.
Milner also enjoyed a distinguished international career, earning 61 caps for England after making his debut in 2009.
